Addressing the other side
If the other side is a lawyer, "Mr. Smith" or "Ms. Smith" <span class="noglossary">will</span> do. Ignore how the lawyers address each other in front of the judge.
If the other side doesn't have a lawyer, it's usually all right to use first names, but it's better to address each other formally as "Mr. _____" and "Ms. _____".
