}}Separation usually signals the breakdown of a serious relationship. It can be one of the most traumatic stages in the conclusion of a relationship, but a brief period of separation can also lead to reconciliation and the resumption of life. Separation occurs when one or more of the people involved in a romantic or family relationship decides that their relationship is over and says so; there's no need to hire a lawyer or get the approval of a judge.
This section discusses the legal aspects of separation, the rules about reconciliation, and some of the other things you may want to think about once you have separated or have decided to separate. The information in this section applies to ''married spouses'' and ''unmarried spouses''— people who are legally married to each other, people who have lived together for two years or morein a "marriage-like relationship, or " and people who have lived together for less than two years if they've and have had a child together.
This section will also discuss addresses some common questions about sex and new relationships after separation. The first section in this chapter, [[Separating Emotionally]], talks about the emotional dimensions of separation and how those emotional issues can influence the resolution of the legal issues.
